Ingredients to Make Rava Upma

  • 1 cup of rava/sajjige/semolina/sooji
  • 2 tsp Ghee or Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Chana Dal
  • 1/2 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1/4 tsp Jeera
  • 10 to 12 Curry Leaves
  • 1 Green Chili
  • Small Piece of ginger
  • 1 Medium Size Onion
  • 1 Medium Size Tomato
  • 3 Cups of water
  • Salt as per the taste
  • 1 tsp Sugar

How to Make Rava Upma Recipe

1. Put rava in a thick-bottomed vessel and fry it for around 15mins on a medium flame until the color slightly changes and gives a nice aroma. Switch off the flame put it on a plate and keep it aside so that it does not get over-roasted in a hot pan.

2. Wash the vegetables thoroughly with clean water and chop them into small pieces. Cut green chili into small pieces and smash the ginger. Put everything on a plate and keep it aside.

3. Add oil/Ghee, mustard seeds, jeera, chana dal, and urad dal in a pan. Once mustard seeds start spluttering, add curry leaves. Let it fry for 1min.

4. Add green chili, smashed ginger, and onion and fry it for 2mins. Just fry till the onions become a little transparent. Do not brown the onions.

5. Add tomatoes and mix them well. Let it cook for 2-3mins. Once everything is cooked well you can add little sugar and mix it well.

6. Add 3 cups of water, and salt and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling you can add 2-3 spoons of ghee to it. Adding ghee gives a nice aroma and texture. Also, it reduces stickiness.

7. Add fried rava into the boiling water slowly. While adding rava do not pore everything at a time, make sure you add it in batches and give it a good stir. So that rava gets mixed up with water well and does not form lumps.

8. Cover the lid and keep it on a low flame for about 2-3 mins. Rava Upma/Uppittu is ready. Serve it hot.

Some useful tips

  1. Use good quality rava for rava upma.
  2. Use only roasted rava for preparing upma. If you have roasted rava at home then you can use it directly else you must fry it. Otherwise, you will get lumps while adding rava into the boiling water and rava upma becomes very sticky.
  3. Add rava into boiling water slowly in batches. While adding keep stirring so you do not get any lumps.
  4. Add water to rava in 1:3 proportion that is for 1 cup of rava add 3 cups of water.
  5. Serve rava upma hot. While serving you can give it a nice shape by putting it in a bowl or any small vessel of your choice then put it upside down on the plate tap it and remove the bowl/vessel.
